Kamidana, literally meaning "Shelf of Deity", is a type of miniature shrine placed or hung high on a wall in Japanese homes and dojo facilities.

In most cases, Kamidana enshrine different things depending on the location. In Dojo, Kamidana may contain Dojo Kun [motto], Dojo Mon [logo], Scrolls, notes and treasures.

Kamidana are not the focus of worship however the items you place inside are what you hold close to you.

Used in the home they may simply display as a decorative architecture or house what-ever religion is associated or practiced within the family. For example, Catholic families in Japan that may have Kamidana in their home will contain a cross, small statues of Jesus, Mary, Fatima and Joseph. Next door a Mahayana Buddhist [a Dharmic, non-theistic religion, a philosophy, and a system of psychology] family may have Kamidana containing Scroll, readings, "The Four Noble Truths" and "The Noble Eightfold Path".
