Goju-Ryu Karate-Do Volumes I and II by Motoo Yamakura
The first volume in this series addresses the introductory aspects of Goju-Ryu karate. It does that, but also goes well beyond in that it provides insight into karate practices appropriate to more advanced students. Our experience and level of understanding play a role in interpreting information and the book operates on several levels simultaneously.
The second volume takes up where the first book leaves off and has insights appropriate to more advanced students. Volume two relies on a comprehensive study of volume one and continues the technical and philosophical aspects of Goju-Ryu in a logical progression.
An attribute of the books is that Yamakura Sensei frequently points out the relevance of martial arts training to life and its experiences. Most martial arts are portrayed as having character development as the goal, but the mechanism is not always explained or demonstrated. This is a factor of the teacher, not the art. The second volume addresses the life aspects of the training to a greater extent than the first.
The two videos complement the books by providing the action of the kata movements pictured in the books. The set of videos correlate to the books appropriately.
The books and videos are not only excellent references, but provide the unique insight of the leader of the Goju-Ryu Karate-Do Kyokai. Often it is the presentation of a concept that makes it particularly appropriate, and Yamakura Sensei demonstrates the ability to convey key aspects of Goju-Ryu Karate-do.
I enthusiastically recommend these books and videos to any serious student of Goju-Ryu.
